最近、前と比べてできるだけ英語の勉強に時間を使おうと努力している。不足しているボキャブラリーを増やそうとしたり、リスニングやシャドーイングをしたり。
で、最近見つけたサイト『
Simple English Wikipedia』も時々読んでいる。シンプルな英語を使って、構文もシンプル。だから読みやすい。
時事ネタで言うとハロウィン
今はあまり難しい英語に触れるより、簡単な英語にたくさん触れようと思っているわけです。

Halloween is a holiday. It is on the night of October 31.
It is celebrated in many English speaking countries. Children wear costumes. They go to people's homes. The people give them candy. Children say "Trick or treat!" to ask for candy. This comes from a threat. It means, "Give me a treat or I will play a trick on you." Children today usually do not do the tricks if they do not get treats. But some children still do mischief (playful pranks or things to make fun of people like putting toilet paper in trees or writing with soap on windows).
In these countries Halloween is about ghosts, witches, goblins, and other scary things.
今はあまり難しい英語に触れるより、簡単な英語にたくさん触れようと思っているわけです。

ダニに刺されて、それはもうひどい思いをした。ダニに刺されると痒いとは聞いていたけど、想像以上に痒かったぁ。
で、夏も終わり、秋も終わり、冬になったわけですが、やっぱり痒い！！！
痒い！かゆい！かゆい！itchy！
なんで痒いかと言いますと。
乾燥しているから。日本にいるとき、そしてニュージーランドにいるとき、乾燥して体が痒くなるなんて一度もなかった。なのにここへ来て、そりゃもう痒い。
アトピーの人の気持ちを少し理解した感じ。
痒いのは足と腰、パンツのゴムが当たるあたり、二の腕あたり。
そこで「乾燥肌 対策」と検索してみると、出るわ出るわいろんなWebサイトが。とりあえずわかったことは
こんな感じらしい。
そのほかに「コラーゲンを多く含むものを食べる」とか「日焼け止めは感想を招くから控える」とか「適度な運動は健康な肌を作る」なんてのもあった。

もし１日が２５時間だったら。
もし１時間長く何かをできるとしたら、みなさん何をしますか？
僕は寝てました…１時間余計に。
今日サマータイムが終わって通常の時間になりました。っていうか、雪がこの前降ったのに、今さらサマータイムが終わったってなんか変な感じなんだけど。
夜中の２時にサマータームが終わるから、寝る前に１時間戻して寝た。つまり１時に寝ても実際は１２時に寝たって事。
そして起きた時間はいつもと同じ時間。有意義な使い方だったのか、無駄遣いだったのか…。
ニュージーランドにいたときも確か同じだった気がする。
さて、今日から日本とカナダの時差が１２時間になったのかな。ちょうど半日ずれているわけです。あれ１４時間差になったのかな？どっちだろ…

今回の文章はココから
昨日バイトの行き帰りに4分×15回くらいシャドーイングをやって、そのあとこの文章を見たんだけど、だいぶ聞けていた。細かいsなど聞き落としはたくさんあるけど、だいたい合ってた。
今日は単語の意味を調べた上でさらに15回ほど聞いた。昨日と比べてよく聞こえる。聞き落とす単語はほとんどなかった。明日以降違うタイトルを聞こう。今回のタイトルは２日しかかからなかった。

Conditions for growing pumpkins were poor in some areas of the United States this year. The East and parts of the Midwest suffered heavy rains and extreme heat. So the supply for sale has decreased, making prices higher than last year.
Still, many people are buying the large, round fruit. Pumpkins are an important part of the American celebration of Halloween on October thirty-first. Many families visit farms or farmers markets so their children can pick out the pumpkins they want. They remove the insides of the pumpkin and cut pieces from the outside to make a face.
Sometimes they place and light candles inside their carved pumpkin faces. People place the pumpkins outside their homes or in their windows.
Americans also use pumpkins for cooking, especially during the American holiday of Thanksgiving in late November. Tradition says early settlers are ate pumpkin pie or something similar to it. Pumpkins belong to the gourd family. They are related to melons, cucumbers and squashes. Some people call pumpkins vegetables. But others, including scientists, call them fruit. Pumpkins have hard skins and seeds in the center. And they contain more Vitamin A than almost any other fruit.
People have grown pumpkins in North and Central America for thousands of years. Pumpkins grow on vines or bushes. Most weigh only few kilograms. But some pumpkins grow to be huge.
A farmer from the state of Rhode Island recently won a competition with a pumpkin that weighed six hundred eighty-one kilograms. It could be the largest in the world. Such super pumpkins are often shown at agricultural fairs.
Pumpkins get their start when bees fertilize their flowers. The insects carry reproductive material called pollen from the male to the female flowers. No pumpkins will grow if the female flower is not pollinated at the right time.
People use pumpkin in pies, breads, cakes and other baked goods, Many Americans also like to eat baked pumpkin seeds. Americans can also buy processed pumpkin in cans
However, experts say it is not a good idea to process fresh pumpkin at home to use in the future because dangerous bacteria can develop. But whole pumpkins can store well for weeks in a cool, dark place.

英和辞書見たら「かぼちゃ」って書いてあった。じゃあ、パンプキンと何が違うんだろ…。

少し前にLOST シーズン2を見始めてあっという間に見終わっちゃいました。
毎回見る度に「えーーー！ここで終わっちゃうの！」という状態で、「もう１話見て寝ようかな」とか「バイトまで１時間あるから見てから行こうかな」とか、早く次を見たくてしょうがない毎日でした。
そして一昨日くらいから今テレビでも放送されているシーズン３を追いかけながら見ている。まだ見たのは１話目だけ。まだよくわからない。でも面白いのは間違いない。
なんか思ったのはシーズン１は謎の島にたどり着いた人たちの紹介。彼らの過去と、なぜ墜落した飛行機に乗っていたのか、なぜその島に引き寄せられたのか、その辺をメインに話は進んでいた。そしてシーズン２は見つけたハッチ（秘密基地みたいなの）をメインに話が展開されているって感じ。
英語字幕だから理解度も若干低いし、シーズン１からじっくり辞書使って紐解いていこうかな。がんばるぞー

最近めっきり寒くなってバイト先まで自転車では行かずに歩いて通っている。というのも自転車で風を切って走るのは寒すぎるから。それこそ指とか耳が凍っちゃうんじゃないかと思わせられる。
で、歩いて通うからには歩きながら何かしたいなーと始めたのが、シャドーイングという英語の勉強方法。
一言で言ってしまえば、「英語を聞きながらそれを少し遅れて真似する」というもの。これが簡単そうで難しい。よく聞いてないと聞き取れないし、一語一句きちんと聞かないといけない。それにしゃべることに意識を集中すると聞こえないし、聞くことに意識を集中するとしゃべれない。
この学習方法以前、どこかで耳にしたことがあって何気なく始めたんだけど、あとでインターネットで「シャドーイング」と検索するとかなり効果のある勉強法らしい。
ここでは詳しく説明をすることはしませんが、興味のある人はやってみてはいかがでしょう。なんでも通訳とか英語を仕事として使っている人たちも取り入れている勉強方法らしいですよ。
ちなみに、僕が使っているリスニングの教材は「VOA special english」です。ここは他のニュースサイトと比べてゆっくりしゃべってくれるし、語彙数も少ないので良いです。
２週間とか３週間で効果が出るようなことはないけれど、日本に帰る頃までにちょこっとでも英語できるようなっていればいいなーと思って続けます。はい。

２週間くらい前になるけど、紅葉を見に近所を自転車で散歩してきたので、そのときの写真を載せてみようと思う。
まず行った場所は、バッパーから自転車で１５分くらい行ったところにあるRideau hall（リドーホール：和名は総督官邸）と呼ばれる場所。ここはカナダの総督が住んでいる場所で昼間は自由に観光客が出入りすることができる。
行ったときはまだ時期が少し早かったのか、木によってはあまり赤くなっていない木もあった。でも、それがまたキレイだった。そうかと思えば右の写真のように真っ赤になっている木もあった。
そして、行く途中で彼女が働いているジャパレスで買ったお寿司（Rideau rollなど）をお弁当として食べた。少し外は寒かったけど、とうぶん外でご飯を食べるなんてことできないし日が出ていて、気持ちよかった。
ちなみにこのお寿司Rideau rollはこの場所、Rideau hallとかけてつけた名前みたい。
右の写真はすごく紅葉がすすんでいる木をアップで撮ってみた。
カナダでキレイな紅葉を見ていて、「日本でも紅葉キレイな場所はたくさんあるんだから、そういう場所に今度行ってみたい」と思った。ワーホリへ行った人たちの中で帰国後、日本のいろんな場所へ行く人が多いのは、そういう日本の良さを再認識するからなのかもしれないなーと思った。
まず行った場所は、バッパーから自転車で１５分くらい行ったところにあるRideau hall（リドーホール：和名は総督官邸）と呼ばれる場所。ここはカナダの総督が住んでいる場所で昼間は自由に観光客が出入りすることができる。
行ったときはまだ時期が少し早かったのか、木によってはあまり赤くなっていない木もあった。でも、それがまたキレイだった。そうかと思えば右の写真のように真っ赤になっている木もあった。
そして、行く途中で彼女が働いているジャパレスで買ったお寿司（Rideau rollなど）をお弁当として食べた。少し外は寒かったけど、とうぶん外でご飯を食べるなんてことできないし日が出ていて、気持ちよかった。
ちなみにこのお寿司Rideau rollはこの場所、Rideau hallとかけてつけた名前みたい。
右の写真はすごく紅葉がすすんでいる木をアップで撮ってみた。

前回のがちょっと長かったので、今回は短い文章を選んでみた。
数回mp3のファイルを聞いてみて、全体的には意味が分かるけど細かいところを追っていくとやっぱり意味が分からない部分もたくさんある。

America's population reached one hundred millin in nineteen fifteen. It reached two hundred million just over fifty years later, in nineteen sixty-seven.
But the country has taken less than forty years to reach three hundred million people. And researchers expect a population of four hundred million in even less time.
At that point, in two thousand forty-three, non-Hispanic whites could make up just over half the population.

前にも書いたかもしれないけど、ここオタワの冬は尋常な寒さじゃない。なんと言っても世界で２番目に寒い首都だから。１番はウラジオストックらしいです。
なので、普通の窓じゃ、いくら窓が閉まっていてもガラスを通して冷気がドンドン入り込んでくる。なので、窓が２重構造になっています。
春や夏、秋は外側の窓は取り外されていて普通の窓。そして冬になる前に外側の窓が取り付けられ２重窓になるわけ。
今日とうとう２重窓になりました。
そしてマイナス３０度の世界へ突入するわけです。先週の金曜日、雨降ったんだけどすでにミゾレみたいだった。まだ１０月なかばなのに。
ところで「バナナで釘が打てる」のはマイナス何度の世界ですかね？

もらったメールには幾つか情報を載せて返信した。あとは会議にかけて良ければそのレストランへ取材に行くそうだ。
もし、取材に実際来てテレビで放映されるようであれば、またここでお知らせします。まぁ、星の数ほどある情報の一つだから、会議を通る可能性も少ないと思うけど。

もう少し前の話になるけど、先週の月曜日カナダはThanks giving dayでした。
Thanks givingについて知らない人のために一応、何かって言うのを書いておくと
サンクスギビングとはカナダでは１０月の第２週月曜日、アメリカでは１１月末にある祝日。もともとは収穫を神様に感謝する日らしいです。
夕食はパーティーを開き、みんなでターキーを食べ、最後はパイでしめくくるものらしい。
ニュージーランドにはThanks givingという習慣はなく、今回初めての体験でした。お昼過ぎからみんなで料理の準備をして、宿泊客全員に作った料理を振る舞った。
料理の数たるやすごい量で、えーーーこんなに食べれるの？と思うほどキッチンにあったけど、宿泊客全員に振る舞ったせいか、あっというまになくなっていた。
僕たちが作ったのは今回もお寿司。なんか最近イベントがあるごとに巻き寿司を作っている。具は定番でサーモンとアボカドと、野菜いろいろ。
Thanks givinｇだからといって特別なことをする訳じゃなくてただひたすら食べて、終わりだった。

Many of the people who join national service programs are college students. In some cases they can reveive money to help pay for their studies.
Many others are recent graduates who have delayed their entry into the job market. This is true even though there are more jobs for young people who just finished college than they were last year.
Job offerings are up about fourteen percent among members of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. The group says startin pay for college graduates also has increased.
Often the only thing that a person earns from a service organization is the satisfaction of helping others. But it can help young people gain skills for a chosen profession.
For those who are not sure about a profession, the experience might help them decide what they want to do.

ついこのあいだ、LOST Season1を見終わりました。
すっごい面白かった！でも、Season 1では何も解決してないじゃんか！って感じでした。いつも通り終わったって感じで、Season 1で何か一つくらいスッキリするかと思いきや、むしろもっと謎が深まっていった。
もういったいどうなってるんだ！
と、いうことでSeason 2はDVDを買っちゃいました。
日本でLOST Season1の日本語字幕有り版を買うと定価で21000円、Amazonだったら16000円もするけど英語版だと7000円。英語を勉強するっていう意味もあって買ってるから日本語の字幕は必要ないし、安いに越したことはない。
っていうかなんで日本語版はあんなに高いんだ？ぼったくりでしょ、ほとんど。
今はSeason 2を見てます。4話目まで見ました。もう止まらない！
そして先週からカナダではSeason 3の放送が始まってます。毎週水曜日放送！
でも、Season 2を見終わってないから、これはお預け。で、追いついたらSeason 1の1話目から録りためたのを見るぞ！

もう一つはVOA-Voice of America-というインターネットサイトを利用してリスニングとかリーディングの勉強を始めてます。
ここのサイトは英語を勉強する人のために作られていて、Special Englishのコーナーでは語彙が1500語と絞られた状態で書かれているし、その音声ファイルもゆっくりしゃべっているので聞き取りやすいです。
VOAで調べた単語は、ここに載せていこうかなーなんて思ってます。自分にプレッシャーかけられるかな？と。三日坊主にならないようにしなくちゃ。

ハロウェインまで、まだだいぶあるんだけど（10月31日）ジャック オー ランタンを作りました！人生初ジャック オー ランタンだったけど、すごく面白かった！というか初ハロウィン！
日本もニュージーランドもハロウィンの文化はうっすらあるけど、みんながこぞって祝うという雰囲気ではない。どことなく商業的でアメリカとかでやってるから祝おう！という雰囲気がする。
でも、ここカナダはみんなでお祝いする雰囲気満点です。
と、いうことで大好評（？）の「ご飯の炊き方」「うどんの作り方」に続くHow toシリーズの第3回目は「ジャック オー ランタンの作り方」です。
- 図１のようにヘタの部分を取るためにガイドラインを。そしてそれに沿って包丁で切れ目を入れていきます。このときカボチャは固いので指を落とさないように注意。
- そして、ヘタが取れたら中をスプーンなどで図２のようにキレイにくりぬく。そのあと中をキレイに洗う。
- キレイになったら、顔のデザインをあまり濃くないペンで書く。このときマーカーなど太いのを使うとあとで残るので注意。
- あとは線に沿ってキレイにくり貫いてろうそくを中に灯すだけ！
- 証明を落とすとこんな感じ
- 一緒に作ったBenjaminのジャック オー ランタンと一緒に。NZ出身だけあってマオリ風。
今回は小さいので作ったけど次回は大きいので作るぞ！
